PATRIOTISM
To serve and honor our country in the
church and community
WHAT WE DO:
COMMUNITY
INDIVIDUAL
Fr. Michael J. McGivney, an Irish–American Catholic priest, founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut. He gathered a group of men from St. Mary's Parish for an organizational meeting on October 2, 1881. It was incorporated on March 29, 1882.
Fr. McGivney had originally conceived of the name "Sons of Columbus". James T. Mullen, who later led the organization, coined the name "Knights of Columbus", which expressed the ritualistic nature of the new organization and drew from positive historical associations.
As a symbol that allegiance to their country did not conflict with allegiance to their faith, the organization’s members took as their patron Christopher Columbus — recognized as a Catholic and celebrated as the discoverer of America.
The order was designed to foster members' pride in both their Catholic and American heritages and to establish standards of behavior for Catholic gentlemen.
Founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity Their intent? To bring financial aid and assistance to the sick, disabled and needy members and their families.
In addition to the Order’s stated benefits, Catholic men were drawn to the Knights because of its emphasis on serving one’s Church, community and family with virtue.
Today, it advocates for Catholic causes and provides a range of philanthropic and support services to Catholic institutions worldwide. It is also one of the world's largest insurance companies and operates the shrine to Pope John Paul II in Washington, D.C.
The beatification ceremony for Fr. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, was celebrated Oct. 31, 2020, in the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn. You can watch a video of it at kofc.org/beatification

At our March 9, 2021 meeting, St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus council was presented with a Star Council Award. About 25 of the state’s 270 councils received the award. In order to achieve this award, a council must first earn three other awards - the Father McGivney, the Founders and the Colombian Awards.
The Father McGivney Award recognizes excellence in membership growth.
The Colombian Award recognizes excellence in councils programs and charitable outreach.
The Founders Award recognizes excellence in the council’s promotion of Knights of Columbus insurance and Fraternal Benefits.
The Knights of Columbus Council 1865 regularly meets on the second Tuesday of the month. We pray the rosary at 6:20pm. This is followed by a brief social until 7:00pm when a meal is served, followed by our meeting.
Bingo at the Care Center every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at 7pm.
Men: Are You Ready to Accept the Challenge?
Since 1882, membership in the Knights of Columbus has been open to men 18 years of age or older who are "practical" (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. Since that time, the Knights of Columbus has understood "practical catholic" to mean a Catholic who accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.
As a member, you join a worldwide community of nearly two million men, including thousands here in Minnesota who stand together.
Our communities need strong Catholic men to answer the call to lead with faith, protect our families, serve others and defend our values. For over one hundred years, Knights of Columbus have done exactly that, standing up for the Church, serving the least among us, and strengthening our parishes and families. Men have a duty to lead, protect, serve and defend. The world needs more committed, unified Catholic men to answer the call. Will you answer?
Eligible Catholic men can now join the Knights of Columbus online in a simple, streamlined process. Join online by going to: www.kofc.org/joinus
Anyone interested in joining us can contact the Grand Knight, Ronald Dahling at (651) 345-2014, or rondahling@yahoo.com, Doug Thompson or Doug Mahal.
